East Tennessee // Literal sibling substitution

We don't rent the Z4. We rent its co-developed sibling.

Toyota Supra and BMW Z4 were engineered together on the same platform. Different body, different top, identical bones.

The BMW Z4 and Toyota Supra were co-developed as a joint project — they share BMW's CLAR chassis platform, the BMW B58 turbocharged inline-six engine, and the ZF 8-speed transmission. Toyota developed the Supra's suspension geometry and tuning targets differently (stiffer, lower, more focused than the Z4), but the fundamental architecture is identical. The practical difference for a renter: the Z4 is a soft-top roadster with open-air driving capability; the Supra is a fixed-roof coupe with slightly more structural rigidity. If you searched for a Z4 specifically for the convertible experience, the Miata is more satisfying for that. If you searched for the BMW-tuned sports car experience, the Supra literally is that.

Literally the same car underneath

The A90 Toyota Supra and G29 BMW Z4 are not just similar — they were engineered simultaneously by a joint Toyota-BMW team. The CLAR chassis, the B58 inline-six, and the ZF 8-speed are identical components. Toyota specified different suspension tuning, different body styling, and a coupe roofline vs. the Z4's soft-top. The resulting cars drive differently — the Supra is more focused, the Z4 is slightly more comfortable — but the underlying character is the same.

This is the most directly parallel substitution we offer. A Z4 M40i driver who steps into the Supra will immediately recognize the engine sound, the transmission behavior, and the chassis balance.

If the convertible top is the point

The Z4's defining feature is its soft top — it's a proper open roadster with the top-down experience the Supra doesn't offer. If that's the reason you were searching for a Z4, the Supra isn't the right substitute. The 1995 Mazda Miata is the open-top alternative in our fleet — lighter, more communicative, a different character entirely, but the genuine convertible experience.

The Miata is also smaller and older; it's not a Z4 stand-in for the BMW driving experience. It's the convertible option when the open air matters more than the BMW connection.

Frequently asked questions

Do the Supra and Z4 really share the same engine?

Yes — the BMW B58 turbocharged inline-six, in different state of tune. The Z4 M40i makes 382 hp in the same configuration as the Supra 3.0. The development partnership is well-documented and not disputed.

Is there a BMW Z4 on Turo in East Tennessee?

Occasionally. Turo has private Z4 listings in the wider Knoxville area — availability is inconsistent. Search Turo's Knoxville location for current listings.

Can the Supra do the Foothills Parkway top-down?

No — the Supra is a fixed-roof coupe. For top-down driving on the Foothills Parkway, the Miata is the right car. For a sports car experience on the Foothills Parkway without the open air, the Supra is excellent.

Which is the better driver's car — Z4 or Supra?

Motoring press generally considers the Supra slightly more focused and engaging to drive on a technical road, attributing it to Toyota's suspension tuning decisions relative to BMW's more comfort-oriented Z4 setup. On East Tennessee's mountain roads, both are excellent. The Supra has the edge on technical precision.

Can I take the Supra on Tail of the Dragon?

Yes. The Dragon is the Supra's natural environment — 382 hp BMW-tuned chassis on 318 corners.

Can I pick this up if I'm staying in Gatlinburg or Pigeon Forge?

Yes. Our pickup is near TYS in Maryville/Alcoa. From Gatlinburg it's about 50 minutes; from Pigeon Forge or Sevierville it's 40–45 minutes.
