Honest comparison
Drive865 vs Turo
We're on both. We run them both. Here's the actual tradeoff between direct and marketplace booking — written by us, but accurate.
TL;DR
Direct is usually cheaper and faster to message; Turo gives you the platform safety net. Same cars either way.

Same fleet, same hosts
Drive865's fleet is listed on Turo too. The same cars, parked in the same lot, handed off by the same hosts. We didn't build this as a marketplace play and then put the cars on Turo — we built it as a direct rental company and Turo is one of the channels we sell through, like a hotel listed on both its own site and Booking.com.
What that means for you: there's no quality difference between booking direct and booking through Turo. The car, the lockbox, the pickup process, the support you get during the trip — identical. The difference is purely the booking and platform layer.
Why direct is usually cheaper
Turo's revenue comes from a platform fee that's built into the rate the customer sees. The host doesn't take it home; Turo takes it. For Drive865 specifically, we set our Turo rates higher than our direct rates so the post-fee revenue lands roughly where our direct rates already are. The customer sees a higher Turo number and pays it.
When you book direct on Drive865, you skip the platform fee entirely. Same car, lower rate. The savings range from about 10% on shorter rentals to about 25% on longer ones where the discount tiers compound. Our promo codes and D865 Credits also only apply to direct bookings.
Where Turo wins
Turo's protection plans are real coverage. If you don't have personal auto insurance that extends to rentals, or you don't want to use it, Turo's Standard or Premier plan gives you straightforward coverage with a known deductible. Worth the markup if you're risk-averse or don't want to file with your own insurance for a fender bender.
The other thing Turo gives you is a mediation layer. If something goes wrong — disagreement on damage, dispute over a refund, anything — Turo has a customer service team that arbitrates. Direct bookings rely on talking to us. We're easy to talk to, but if you'd rather have a third party in the middle, that's Turo's job.
And if you've used Turo a lot, the process is familiar. We're not going to argue you out of using a flow that works for you.
How to decide
If price matters and you're comfortable booking direct from a small business, book direct. Most of our repeat customers do, and the savings on a 3–5 day rental usually exceed the entire cost of a tank of gas.
If you're new to peer-to-peer rentals, want a platform safety net, or want Turo's protection plans, book on Turo. The car is the same; you'll have a fine trip; you'll pay a bit more for the structure.
Either way, we get the rental either way — we don't care which channel you come through, and the experience on the ground is identical. The honest answer here is: pick the channel that matches your risk preference and budget, then stop overthinking it.
Frequently asked questions
Are the cars actually the same on both platforms?
Yes. Drive865's fleet is listed on both. Same vehicles, same hosts, same lot, same lockbox process. The platform you book through doesn't change the car you get.
Why does the Turo price look higher than the direct price?
Because Turo's platform fee is built into the rate the customer sees. We set Turo rates higher to net out roughly the same post-fee revenue. The customer pays the platform; the host (us) doesn't keep the difference.
Can I use Drive865 promo codes on Turo?
No. Our promo codes and D865 Credits only apply to direct bookings on this site. Turo's discounts (if any) come from Turo, not from us.
Which is faster for last-minute bookings?
Direct is usually faster. Text us, get a yes/no within minutes if we're available. Turo's flow takes longer but works fine.
What if I have a problem during the trip?
Direct: you text or call us, same as you would a friend who lent you a car. Turo: you message through Turo's app, and Turo's customer service is also a fallback. Either path works; the support quality on our end is identical because it's the same hosts.
Does Drive865's insurance cover me on a Turo booking?
Insurance on Turo bookings is governed by Turo's protection plans (or whichever plan you select). Our direct-booking rental agreement and insurance terms apply only to direct bookings.
