East Tennessee // Honest substitution

We don't rent the Challenger. The Supra drives the roads better.

The Challenger is the heaviest of the muscle trio. The Supra is a precision instrument. On East TN mountain roads, precision wins.

The Dodge Challenger is the heaviest of the American muscle trio — the Scat Pack and Hellcat are impressive in a straight line but weigh 4,200–4,500 pounds. On the mountain switchbacks of Tail of the Dragon or the elevated hairpins of the Cherohala Skyway, that weight works against you in a way 500 hp can't compensate for. The Supra is 700–1,100 pounds lighter, has a chassis co-developed by BMW specifically for sporting dynamics, and in the corners is a fundamentally different and better experience. Both cars are dramatic; the Supra is the drama that serves the roads East Tennessee actually has.

Why weight matters on East TN roads

The Dodge Challenger is an excellent car for what it's designed to do — a straight-line muscle car with intimidating presence and a V8 that sounds like a threat. It's not designed for technical mountain driving. At 4,200 pounds, the physics of 318 consecutive corners on Tail of the Dragon are an exercise in physics management that no amount of horsepower changes. A car that turns in fast, brakes short, and communicates its limits is what the Dragon rewards.

The Supra, at 3,400 pounds, is still not the lightest car on this road (the BRZ is lighter, the Miata is lighter still). But the Supra's BMW-developed chassis is explicitly designed for dynamic mountain driving, and the 700-pound weight advantage over a Challenger Scat Pack is felt on every corner for the entire day.

When the Challenger is honestly the better call

If you want passengers. The Challenger has a real rear seat — three adults can sit in it for a road trip. The Supra's rear seat is a genuine 2+2 — two adults in reasonable comfort, or two adults plus luggage. If you're transporting four people, the Challenger is more practical.

If the V8 sound is the specific thing you're after. The Challenger with the 5.7L or 6.2L Hemi has an exhaust note that the turbocharged Supra's six doesn't replicate. If the experience of a big American V8 at full throttle is the reason for the rental, that's a legitimate reason to seek a Challenger from Turo.

Frequently asked questions

Does Drive865 have any American muscle cars?

Not currently. The Supra is the closest car in our fleet to the American muscle archetype — big power, RWD, dramatic presence — but it's a European-Japanese sports car by engineering. If a V8 American muscle car is the specific requirement, Turo is the right resource.

Can I rent a Challenger in East Tennessee?

Turo is the most reliable source. Scat Pack and Hellcat Challengers occasionally appear as private listings in the Knoxville area. National chains at TYS don't carry Challengers.

Is the Supra faster than the Challenger?

It depends on the Challenger trim. A Challenger SRT Hellcat (717 hp) will outrun the Supra in a straight line. A base Challenger GT (303 hp) will not. The Supra (382 hp, ~3.9s 0–60) beats or matches most Challenger trims in corners regardless.

What if I need to fit four passengers?

None of our sports cars comfortably seat four. The Supra, BRZ, and MR2 are all two-plus-two at best. If you need four real seats, consider the WRX GT (genuine 4-door sedan) or the Civic Sport Touring.

Can I pick this up if I'm staying in Gatlinburg or Pigeon Forge?

Yes. Our pickup is near TYS in Maryville/Alcoa. From Gatlinburg it's about 50 minutes; from Pigeon Forge or Sevierville it's 40–45 minutes. Most guests pick up at TYS on arrival and keep the Supra for their entire East Tennessee trip.
