What 'Turo Smoky Mountains' actually finds

Great Smoky Mountains National Park is the most visited national park in the US, but there are no Turo hosts operating inside or immediately adjacent to the park. When you search 'Turo Smoky Mountains' or 'Turo GSMNP,' Turo's algorithm expands to the nearest metro with supply — Knoxville, about 45–50 minutes from the main park entrances.

Drive865 is the host in that search result for the vehicles that match the Smokies trip profile: capable, maintained, and interesting. The FJ Cruiser for trailhead access. The WRX STI for high-elevation mountain roads in variable conditions. The Odyssey for families who are doing three park days and need the logistics to be simple.

Matching vehicle to Smokies itinerary

The Smokies covers a lot of terrain and trip types. Clingman's Dome is a paved scenic drive to 6,643 feet — any vehicle handles it when the road is open. The Dragon (US-129 just outside the park boundary) is a driver's road that calls for a specific kind of car.

For trail-heavy itineraries — Alum Cave, Chimney Tops, Laurel Falls — the FJ Cruiser's cargo room and clearance make trailhead parking easier. For families doing the park highlights plus Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge, the Odyssey is the correct call.

For guests who are really here for the roads — Newfound Gap, Foothills Parkway, Cherohala Skyway — the Supra, BRZ, or Miata make every mile a decision to take the long way around. Book direct if you go this route: car-condition questions get answered faster without the Turo messaging layer.

Pickup logistics for the Smokies

Two pickup options. TYS (Economy Lot C, Section Orange 1) is for fly-in guests or anyone coming through Knoxville. Contactless lockbox, five minutes from baggage claim, 50 minutes to Sugarlands.

Our Maryville pickup is better for guests heading to the western Smokies: Cades Cove, the Townsend entrance, Abrams Falls. It's about 25 minutes from the Townsend entrance and skips the Knoxville/Sevierville routing entirely.

The park has no admission fee. Parking at high-traffic trailheads can fill by 9am on summer and fall weekends — timed-entry reservations may apply for certain spots. Check recreation.gov before arrival.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a Turo host in the Smoky Mountains?

Not inside the park. Turo searches for the Smokies surface Knoxville results. Drive865 picks up at TYS (~50 minutes from the main park entrance) and Maryville (~25 minutes from the Townsend entrance).

What's the best car for a Smokies trip?

Depends on the itinerary. FJ Cruiser for trail access and rugged capability. Odyssey for families with kids. Supra or BRZ for mountain road guests. WRX STI for AWD performance on high-elevation routes.

Is the Supra allowed in the park?

Yes. All vehicles in our fleet are allowed in GSMNP. Road surfaces inside the park are paved, and there are no restrictions on low-clearance vehicles except for a few unpaved forest roads.

How long is the drive from TYS to the Smokies?

About 50 minutes to Sugarlands Visitor Center (main Gatlinburg entrance) via US-441. About 25 minutes to the Townsend entrance from our Maryville pickup.

Do I need a permit to drive in GSMNP?

No permit is required to drive through the park. Timed-entry reservations have been required for certain parking areas during peak seasons — check recreation.gov for current conditions.

Is direct booking cheaper than Turo for the Smokies?

Usually yes — 10–25% less. For a 4-day Smokies trip, that's often $80–150 in savings on an enthusiast or adventure vehicle.

Can I pick up at Maryville and return at TYS?

Yes. We accommodate one-way between our two pickup locations. Coordinate this when you book direct.
