We don't rent the M3. The Supra shares its DNA.
Toyota and BMW co-developed the A90 Supra platform with the Z4. The Supra's chassis is BMW-tuned. It's the closest thing to an M car in our fleet.

We don't rent that. Try the 2021 Toyota Supra 3.0 Premium.
The A90 Toyota Supra was co-developed with BMW using the CLAR architecture that also underpins the BMW Z4 roadster. The Supra's engine (BMW B58 inline-six), transmission (ZF 8-speed), and chassis geometry all came out of a joint development program. Toyota specified different suspension tuning targets — the Supra is stiffer and lower than the Z4 — but the fundamental DNA is BMW. An M3 buyer researching the Supra will recognize the steering feel, the chassis character, and the engine's sound as immediately BMW-adjacent. That's not coincidence. It's shared engineering.

The Supra's BMW connection is real
The A90 Toyota Supra was not independently engineered by Toyota. It was a co-development with BMW, using BMW's CLAR platform (the same one under the Z4), BMW's B58 inline-six engine, and a ZF 8-speed transmission. Toyota's input was in styling, suspension tuning targets, and brand identity — the chassis engineering came from BMW.
This matters for a BMW M3 searcher because the Supra's driving character is genuinely BMW-adjacent. The engine's sound, the steering feel through the BMW-spec electric rack, and the chassis balance all trace directly to BMW's development priorities. A driver who knows M cars will recognize the DNA immediately.
Where the M3 is better
The M3 Competition has 503 hp, available AWD, real rear seats for passengers, and the full BMW ecosystem (iDrive, digital cockpit, M modes). It's a more complete car than the Supra in the way a Swiss Army knife beats a hunting knife — more functions, each done well.
For a driver who needs four doors and a usable rear seat alongside M-car performance, the Supra doesn't compete. For a driver who wants a two-seat sports car with BMW-tuned dynamics on East Tennessee mountain roads, the Supra is the right answer.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Supra basically a BMW?
The Supra shares BMW's platform, engine, and transmission — those aren't marketing claims, they're engineering facts. The chassis tuning, exterior design, and brand identity are distinctly Toyota. The bones are BMW.
Is there a BMW M3 on Turo in East Tennessee?
Occasionally — private M3 listings appear on Turo in the Knoxville area. Availability is inconsistent. Check Turo's Knoxville search for current listings.
Can I take the Supra on Tail of the Dragon?
Yes. 382 hp, BMW-tuned chassis, ZF 8-speed — the Supra handles the Dragon's 318 corners with precision and real reserves. It's the halo car in our fleet for the Dragon.
Which is faster — M3 or Supra?
The M3 Competition (503 hp, AWD) is faster in a straight line. The Supra (382 hp, RWD) is lighter and arguably more communicative on a mountain road where the speed limit is 30 mph.
Does the Supra have a manual option?
Not in our fleet — our Supra is the ZF 8-speed automatic. The M3 is available in a manual; ours isn't. For a manual RWD sports car, the BRZ is the alternative.
Can I pick this up if I'm staying in Gatlinburg or Pigeon Forge?
Yes. Our pickup is near TYS in Maryville/Alcoa. From Gatlinburg it's about 50 minutes; from Pigeon Forge or Sevierville it's 40–45 minutes.
