East Tennessee // Honest substitution

We don't rent the Mustang. Our Supra is the same job.

Modern RWD performance coupe with serious power and a dramatic presence — the Supra does what a Mustang does, and handles the curves better.

We don't rent that. Try the 2021 Toyota Supra 3.0 Premium.

Both the Mustang and the Supra are modern RWD performance coupes built around turbocharged engines and driving drama. The meaningful differences: the Supra's BMW-derived chassis is more sorted for technical mountain driving; the Mustang is better tuned for muscle-car straight-line character. For the roads that make East Tennessee worth renting a sports car for — Tail of the Dragon, Cherohala Skyway, Foothills Parkway — the Supra's suspension tuning and center of gravity give it a real edge over the Mustang's live-rear-axle dynamics. The Supra is the car we'd hand a Mustang-intent customer without apology.

Why the Supra fits the Mustang job in East Tennessee

The Ford Mustang has an enormous following and a distinct identity. We understand why people search for it. For straight-line muscle-car character on a wide-open highway, a V8 Mustang GT is a legitimate experience that the Supra doesn't replicate.

But most Mustang searches in the East Tennessee market come from people planning trips to Tail of the Dragon or the Smokies — and on those roads, the Mustang's live rear axle (on the base GT) and heavy body work against it. The Supra's independent rear suspension, lower center of gravity, and BMW-tuned chassis are built for exactly the kind of corner-loaded mountain driving East Tennessee demands.

The Supra also has 382 hp from a 3.0L turbo inline-six — more than enough to feel dramatic on open mountain stretches without the heavy-handed power delivery of the 5.0 V8. It's a driver's car in a way the standard Mustang GT isn't, and that driver-focused character is exactly what the Dragon and Cherohala Skyway reward.

When a Mustang is actually the better choice

If the V8 exhaust note is specifically what you're after — the emotional experience of a 5.0L Mustang GT at full throttle — the Supra's turbocharged six doesn't replicate it. The Supra is a different kind of dramatic. If that specific character is the reason for the trip, we'd tell you to rent a Mustang from a national chain or check Turo, where GT and Mach 1 listings exist in the Knoxville area.

If you want a manual transmission specifically, the Mustang GT comes with a 6-speed. Our Supra is automatic-only (ZF 8-speed with paddle shift). For a manual sports car from our fleet, the BRZ is the better recommendation.

Frequently asked questions

Does Drive865 ever plan to carry the Mustang?

Not currently. Our fleet targets the enthusiast car market with cars that excel specifically on East Tennessee's mountain roads. The Mustang GT's live rear axle doesn't fit that brief, and the Mach 1 and Shelby trims are a different cost bracket. The Supra fills this role well.

Is the Supra faster than the Mustang GT?

The 2021 Supra with the 3.0L makes 382 hp and runs 0–60 in about 3.9 seconds. The base Mustang GT with the 5.0L makes 450 hp and runs 0–60 in about 4.1 seconds with good conditions. Both are very fast. On a mountain road, the Supra feels faster because the chassis works with you instead of against you.

Can I take the Supra on Tail of the Dragon?

Yes. The Dragon is exactly what the Supra is built for. It's more car than the road technically requires, but that gives you enormous margin. You can drive it at 7/10 and feel like a hero; at 9/10 it still has reserves.

Where can I rent a Mustang in East Tennessee if that's specifically what I want?

Turo is the best resource — several private Mustang GT and Mach 1 hosts operate in the Knoxville and Maryville area. National chains at TYS occasionally have convertible Mustangs in their fleet, though availability is inconsistent.

What if I want a manual transmission?

Our Supra is automatic. For a manual sports car, the 2020 BRZ Limited is the better pick — 6-speed manual, RWD, lighter and more communicative for the Dragon. The MR2 GTS is the analog alternative if you want something with more personality.

Can I pick this up if I'm staying in Gatlinburg or Pigeon Forge?

Yes. Our pickup is in the Maryville/Alcoa area near McGhee Tyson Airport (TYS). From Gatlinburg it's about 50 minutes; from Pigeon Forge or Sevierville it's 40–45 minutes. Most guests pick up on arrival at TYS and keep the Supra for the full trip.
