Visiting Townsend, Tennessee?

Townsend, Tennessee is a small town of about 500 permanent residents in the foothills of the Smokies, roughly 30 miles south of Maryville on US-321. Its defining characteristic is what it isn't: it's not Gatlinburg, it's not Pigeon Forge. There are no go-kart tracks, no pancake restaurants on every block, no traffic that backs up a mile from the park entrance. Townsend is the quiet side — the town the NPS and local tourism boards have marketed as such for decades — and that identity is accurate.

The town sits at the Townsend Wye, the intersection where US-321 from the north meets Laurel Creek Road going into the park toward Cades Cove, and TN-73 going east toward Gatlinburg. This makes it a junction for multiple important drives: south toward Cades Cove (15 min), east toward Newfound Gap (40 min to Gatlinburg), west on Laurel Creek Road toward the western park boundary, and eventually southwest toward Deals Gap and the Dragon (50 min via the back roads).

Lodging in Townsend runs from small motels and vacation cabins to a handful of inns. The town is small enough that accommodation books up in peak season (October, holiday weekends). If you're based in Townsend for a Smokies trip, you've made a quiet and practical choice.

The routing works like this: pick up the car in Maryville, drive US-321 south toward Townsend. The drive itself is pleasant — open farmland giving way to foothills on a two-lane highway that's faster than it looks. By the time you reach Townsend, you've already had 30 minutes of good road. From Townsend, Cades Cove is 15 minutes east on Laurel Creek Road. The Foothills Parkway's western section (Walland entrance) is 20 minutes back north on US-321. Deals Gap is 50 minutes southwest through Maryville — the BRZ or MR2 turns that into part of the trip.

If you're flying in, TYS is 45 minutes north of Townsend. Pick up the car at Economy Lot C, drive south through Maryville on US-129, pick up US-321 south at the Maryville bypass, and arrive in Townsend in 45 minutes from the airport. No complicated routing.

Townsend is the best geographic base for a Smokies trip that focuses on the western park: Cades Cove (15 min), the Foothills Parkway west (20 min back north), Little River Road through the park to Gatlinburg (40 min east), and Deals Gap for the Dragon (50 min southwest). Everything is reachable in under an hour without touching Pigeon Forge or the Spur.

The Townsend Wye is also the put-in/take-out area for Little River tubing — a popular summer activity. If your trip combines driving and outdoor activities, Townsend is well-positioned for both. The town has enough restaurants and a few decent shops; for anything more, Maryville is 30 minutes north.
