Tracks near Knoxville

Maryville Motorsports Park is the local track — in Blount County, about 20 minutes from TYS and close to our Maryville pickup location. It's a club-racing facility that hosts HPDE events, time attacks, and track days. For a Drive865 car to go to Maryville Motorsports Park, we need to know about it ahead of time — car availability depends on the event format and the car's current condition. This is the most accessible track day option for Knoxville-area renters who want to minimize travel.

Nashville Superspeedway's road course is in Lebanon, Tennessee — about 2.5 hours west of Knoxville on I-40. It hosts NASA, SCCA, and various club track days throughout the year. If you're doing a Nashville Superspeedway HPDE event and want to rent a Drive865 car specifically for it, this is the most common long-distance track booking we accommodate.

Barber Motorsports Park in Birmingham, Alabama is 2.5 hours southwest on I-65 — one of the best natural-terrain road courses in the country. Barber events include HPDE, SCCA, and Porsche Club track days. We've sent cars to Barber. The round-trip distance means the logistics need planning — unlimited mileage is required, and we discuss this one specifically before committing.

The track-eligible cars

Not every car in the Drive865 fleet goes to every track. The cars we consider for track day use are the BRZ, the MR2, the WRX STI, and the Miata. The Supra, WRX GT, Odyssey, NV Passenger, FJ Cruiser, and Civic are not track-eligible — they're road cars.

The BRZ is the most track-appropriate car in the fleet: lightweight, RWD, balanced, with the simplest mechanical setup. It's built for exactly the kind of event you're likely doing. The Miata is the other obvious track car — the most popular HPDE car in the world, properly balanced, the one that makes the most sense for a first-time HPDE participant. The WRX STI has the power and brakes for track use, but the AWD setup and higher weight change the dynamic compared to the lighter two. The MR2 is the most interesting track car in the fleet — mid-engine makes it genuinely different to drive in an HPDE setting — but it's also the oldest and the most particular about how it's driven.

Be honest with us about your track experience level and your intent. We've approved track bookings before and we'll do it again, but we match the car to the driver and the event. The right conversation before you book is better than the wrong car at a track.

What to discuss before booking

Track day logistics require a conversation before you book, not after. Tell us: which track, which event format (HPDE, time attack, club day), which date, your track experience level, and which car you want. We'll tell you what's available, what the terms are, and whether it's going to work.

Some specific things that affect track availability: recent service status of the car, whether the car already has something booked around your event, and the track's specific requirements for participant vehicles. Some tracks require roll bars, fire extinguishers, or specific tire ratings. Drive865 street tires are generally appropriate for street-course HPDE events but we want to know the specifics.

Track day insurance is different from standard rental insurance. Discuss this with us before booking — Drive865 track bookings have specific terms around liability, mechanical damage, and what happens if there's an incident. We're reasonable and we've done this before. We just need to be on the same page before you're at the gate.

Frequently asked questions

Can I take a Drive865 car to a track day without telling you in advance?

No. Track day use requires pre-approval. If you take a car to a track without disclosing it, the rental terms are void and you're fully liable for any damage. We're not trying to make this difficult — we've approved track bookings before and will do it again. Just talk to us first.

Is the BRZ or the Miata better for a first-time HPDE?

The Miata. It's the most forgiving car in the fleet on a track — the weight distribution is ideal, the feedback is clear, and the relatively modest power ceiling means you can explore the car's limits without getting into trouble quickly. The BRZ is next — slightly more power, slightly less intuitive feedback at the limit, but still very appropriate for an HPDE event.

What about the MR2 for track use?

The MR2 is a compelling track car but not the right choice for a first HPDE participant. Mid-engine cars have a snap oversteer characteristic that rewards experienced drivers but punishes those who haven't felt it before. If you have specific mid-engine track experience — Cayman, Boxster, Elise, or similar — the MR2 is a serious conversation. If you're newer to track driving, start with the Miata.

Is Maryville Motorsports Park a real HPDE venue?

Yes. It runs legitimate driver education events and time attacks. If you're a Knoxville-area driver who wants to try a track day without the Nashville or Birmingham drive, Maryville Motorsports Park is the accessible local option. Verify their upcoming event schedule directly — calendars change seasonally.

Does Drive865 provide a helmet or other safety equipment?

No. You're responsible for your own safety equipment per the track's requirements. Most HPDE events require an SA-rated helmet at minimum. Drive865 provides the car; you bring what the track requires for the driver.

Can I take the WRX STI to a track day?

Possibly — it's on the track-eligible list. The STI's AWD and power profile make it a capable track car. Discuss the specifics with us first, including the event format and track. We're more cautious with the STI than with the Miata or BRZ because the higher power output raises the stakes on mechanical stress.
