Getting a rental car for Pigeon Forge
Pigeon Forge doesn't have independent car rental storefronts. Like Gatlinburg, the local rental market operates through TYS (McGhee Tyson Airport in Alcoa) and through peer-to-peer platforms. Drive865 operates from our Maryville location, about 45 minutes from the Pigeon Forge strip by US-321.
US-321 from Maryville runs northeast through Townsend and connects to the Pigeon Forge area at Wears Valley Road. It's a scenic foothills drive that avoids the Sevierville tourist strip. During peak summer and fall weekends, this route is meaningfully faster than the US-441/US-411 corridor through Sevierville.
For guests flying in, TYS is the right airport. Pick up at TYS via our contactless lockbox, drive south toward Maryville, and take US-321 northeast toward Pigeon Forge. The whole drive from baggage claim to Pigeon Forge is about 65 minutes.
Parking in Pigeon Forge
Pigeon Forge has a trolley system that runs the length of the strip. Many accommodations have free parking; the main Pigeon Forge attractions (Dollywood, LeConte Center) have dedicated lots. Parking is not typically a problem.

Yes. McGhee Tyson Airport (TYS) in Alcoa is the closest commercial airport to Pigeon Forge, about 50 miles. Asheville Regional (AVL) is about 90 miles over the mountains. Nashville (BNA) is 200+ miles. TYS is the right airport for a Pigeon Forge trip.
Can I add Tail of the Dragon to a Pigeon Forge trip?
Yes, but it's a commitment. The Dragon is about 100 miles and 100 minutes from Pigeon Forge. A dedicated Dragon day from Pigeon Forge means an early morning departure. Many guests do it, especially if they're already renting a sports car, but factor in the drive time when planning.
How far is Pigeon Forge from Cades Cove?
About 45 minutes (35 miles) via US-321 through Townsend. The Townsend Wye entrance to the park is a few miles from Townsend. Follow signs to Cades Cove from there. This is one of the best arguments for using the Townsend route rather than staying in Pigeon Forge's traffic.
What's the best time of year to visit Pigeon Forge?
Spring (April–May) and early summer (June) are excellent: park is beautiful, crowds smaller than peak summer. October is the most popular month for foliage but is the busiest. Mid-July through Labor Day is peak summer and the heaviest traffic period.
