East Tennessee // Honest substitution

We don't rent the 4Runner. The FJ Cruiser is the same Toyota DNA.

Body-on-frame, 4.0L V6, 4WD with low range. The FJ Cruiser and 4Runner share a platform and a purpose.

We don't rent that. Try the 2013 Toyota FJ Cruiser Trail Teams.

The Toyota 4Runner and FJ Cruiser share the same body-on-frame N platform, the same 1GR-FE 4.0L V6, and the same part-time 4WD transfer case with high and low range. They were built simultaneously in Toyota's lineup (the FJ ran from 2006–2014) specifically as companions — the FJ Cruiser is the retro-styled sportier variant, the 4Runner is the family-focused practical variant. For the trips most 4Runner renters in East Tennessee are planning — Cades Cove, the Smokies, gravel forest roads — the FJ Trail Teams is the same platform with the added benefit of a locking rear differential.

Same DNA, different character

The Toyota FJ Cruiser and 4Runner are mechanically nearly identical. They share a platform, engine, transfer case, and overall capability profile. Where they diverge is character and configuration: the 4Runner is longer, can seat seven with a third row, and has a more conventional family-SUV interior. The FJ Cruiser is shorter, seats five, has a distinctive retro-styled exterior, and pairs its capability with a more engaged driving feel.

For the East Tennessee trip most 4Runner renters are planning — a drive to Cades Cove, a few days in the Smokies, some gravel detours on forest service roads — the FJ Trail Teams is the same vehicle. The capability is identical. The Trail Teams spec adds the locking rear differential and all-terrain tires that the base 4Runner doesn't have.

Where the 4Runner is the better choice

If you need to seat more than five people, the 4Runner's optional third row is the honest winner — the FJ has no third-row option. If the trip involves significant cargo (camping gear, ski equipment, multiple large bags), the 4Runner's longer body and larger cargo hold are a real advantage.

For pure off-road or rugged-road trips with 1–4 passengers and moderate gear, the FJ Trail Teams matches or exceeds the base 4Runner while adding the rear locker.

Frequently asked questions

Is the FJ Cruiser as reliable as the 4Runner?

Both are among Toyota's most reliable platforms. The 4.0L V6 and N-platform transfer case are well-documented for high-mileage reliability. The FJ Cruiser has a strong reputation among enthusiasts specifically because it shares this mechanically simple, proven platform.

Can I take the FJ Cruiser off-road?

The FJ Trail Teams is capable on gravel forest service roads and rocky trailheads. True rock-crawling or extreme off-road territory is beyond the scope of a rental vehicle regardless of capability — stay on roads marked for vehicle access. For the Smokies, Cades Cove, and East Tennessee forest roads, the FJ handles everything.

How many people does the FJ Cruiser seat?

Five — two front, three rear. The rear seat is accessed via the rear-hinged half-doors. Rear seat room is adequate for three adults on short trips, comfortable for two. There's no third-row option.

Is the FJ automatic or manual?

Our Trail Teams is the 5-speed automatic. Smooth, simple, and well-matched to the 4.0L V6's torque curve.

Can I take the FJ on Tail of the Dragon?

Yes. The Dragon is paved. The FJ handles it within its limits — it's not a sports car, but it's comfortable on the curves at the legal speed. If the Dragon is the whole point of the trip, take a BRZ or Supra. If it's a stop on a Smokies itinerary where the FJ makes sense for the rest, it handles the Dragon without drama.

Can I pick this up if I'm staying in Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge, or Sevierville?

Yes. Our pickup is in Maryville/Alcoa near TYS. From Gatlinburg it's about 50 minutes; from Pigeon Forge or Sevierville it's 40–45 minutes. Many guests pick up at TYS on arrival and drive the FJ directly to their Smokies destination.
