East TN road trip rental
Three days, three states, one good car
Asheville, the Blue Ridge, the Dragon, the Cherohala Skyway. The roads here are the point. Pick the right car for how you drive.
Quick answer
Drive865 rents vehicles for multi-day East Tennessee road trips — the Supra as a GT cruiser, the WRX GT as an AWD mountain machine, the Civic as the efficient manual choice, the Odyssey for groups. Honest caveat: sports cars in this fleet seat 2–4 and have minimal trunk space. Plan your luggage accordingly or book the WRX GT (practical hatchback-ish AWD) or Odyssey (7 seats, real cargo) if you're moving gear. Pickup at TYS or Maryville. Multi-day rates get progressively cheaper.

Choosing your car for the route
East Tennessee road trips fall into a few categories, and the right car is very different for each.
The pure driving trip — Dragon, Cherohala Skyway, Blue Ridge Parkway — is about the road, not the destination. For this, the Supra (GT comfort at speed), the WRX STI (AWD tactical), or the BRZ (lightweight dancing) are the picks. You're not carrying much because the point is the driving.
The destination trip — Asheville, Cherokee, the Outer Banks as a further stretch — is about getting somewhere comfortably and having a good car while you're there. The Supra is the long-haul GT car: comfortable, quiet above 70mph, enough power to make passes effortless. The WRX GT is the practical choice — AWD, four doors, actual trunk, manual gearbox.
The group trip — four or more people with luggage — is Odyssey territory. Seven seats, sliding doors, real cargo. The Odyssey is not the exciting answer but it is the correct one for a family road trip or a friend group that needs to stay together.
The roads worth planning around
The Cherohala Skyway (Tellico Plains to Robbinsville, 43 miles) is the flagship road. High elevation, minimal traffic, ridge-top views, sweeping curves — it's what people mean when they say East Tennessee has the best driving roads in the country. A Supra or STI on the Cherohala on a Tuesday morning in October is one of the great American driving experiences.
The Blue Ridge Parkway out of Asheville adds another dimension if you're willing to cross into North Carolina. 469 miles total, but the section between Asheville and Cherokee gives you an 80-mile stretch of National Park road at 45mph with endless overlooks. Pair it with Deals Gap on the way back and you have a full two-day driving loop.
Asheville itself is worth the trip if you haven't been. Four hours from Knoxville via I-40 (boring) or 3.5 hours via 129/74 through the mountains (not boring). The WRX GT or Supra on the mountain route is the obvious choice.
- Cherohala Skyway: 43 miles, Tellico Plains to Robbinsville, low traffic
- Tail of the Dragon: 318 curves, 11 miles, TN/NC border at Deals Gap
- Blue Ridge Parkway: enters NC near Asheville, connects to Cherokee and Deals Gap loop
- Foothills Parkway: 17-mile ridge road, 20 min from Maryville — easy first-day warmup
- Natchez Trace Parkway: further south, worth the detour if the trip extends to Nashville
What sports cars can and can't carry
Be direct about this: the Supra trunk holds two soft duffel bags. The BRZ has a slightly better trunk. The MR2 has almost no storage — mid-engine means the trunk is in front (the 'frunk') and it's small. The Miata has a small trunk that fits one overnight bag comfortably and two tightly. These are not cars you load up for a week-long trip with checked-luggage-sized suitcases.
The WRX GT is the sports car exception. Four doors, actual rear seat, fold-down rear seats with a hatchback-style loading area. It's the AWD manual car that can actually carry luggage. For a 3-day trip with two people and real bags, the WRX GT is frequently the correct answer even if it's not the most exciting one.
The 2023 Civic Sport Touring holds more cargo than you'd expect from a compact and gets better fuel economy than any other car in the fleet. It's the smart choice for a solo road-tripper or couple who want the manual engagement without committing to a two-seat sports car.

Frequently asked questions
Can I take the car to Asheville or across state lines?
Yes. Standard road trip use into neighboring states (North Carolina, Georgia, Virginia) is fine. The booking covers normal road use. Let us know in advance if your route takes the car significantly far from Tennessee — not because it's restricted, just so we're informed.
What's the most fuel-efficient car in the fleet for a long trip?
The 2023 Honda Civic Sport Touring. Manual transmission, FWD, compact — it gets real-world 35+ mpg on the highway. The Odyssey is next for per-seat efficiency when you have a full group. The Supra is comfortable on long stretches but it's a V8-era engine by consumption.
Is the Supra comfortable on a long highway stretch?
Yes. The ZF 8-speed automatic is smooth, the interior is genuinely quiet above 70mph, and the BMW inline six doesn't strain at highway speeds. It's the most comfortable car in the sports car fleet for multi-hour highway legs. Less comfortable than the Odyssey, more comfortable than the BRZ.
What if it snows or roads are icy in the mountains?
Check conditions before you go. The Cherohala Skyway closes when there's snow or ice at elevation. The Dragon gets slippery. AWD (WRX GT or STI) gives you more confidence than RWD (Supra, BRZ, MR2, Miata) in marginal conditions. If you're road-tripping in November through March, AWD is the sensible choice for mountain routes.
How many bags fit in the Supra?
Two soft duffel bags, roughly carry-on size each. No hard-sided roller luggage unless it's a small personal item. The Supra is a GT car, not a hauler. If you're flying in and picking up at TYS, you need to pack the trip into what fits in the trunk.
Can I do the whole Dragon + Cherohala loop in one day?
Yes, and it's a great day. Dragon first (north to south, Deals Gap), continue south to Robbinsville, then east along the Cherohala Skyway back to Tellico Plains. Return via 411 to Maryville. Budget 6–8 hours with stops, lunch, and enjoying the drive rather than running it. Unlimited mileage recommended.
We're a group of 5 — what's the best setup?
The Odyssey seats 7 comfortably and has room for 5 adults with luggage. Alternatively, a WRX GT (4 adults, tight on cargo) plus a Civic or second compact works if two people want to drive separately. The Odyssey is the cleaner answer for a group that wants to stay together.
