Anniversary driving experience

Foothills Parkway, top down, no itinerary

The best version of this day is a tank of gas and no plan. We handle the car. East Tennessee handles the rest.

Quick answer

An anniversary day in East Tennessee with the right car is genuinely one of the better things you can do in the region. The Miata is the top-down romantic pick — soft top, two seats, Foothills Parkway at golden hour. The Supra is the dramatic modern car for couples who want something more. The MR2 is for the pair who'll tell the story of that car for the next ten years. Pickup at TYS or Maryville. Most anniversary rentals are one or two days.

The route that makes it worth it

You don't need a plan, but a loose one helps. The classic anniversary drive from the Maryville/Knoxville area: pick up the car Saturday morning, take the Foothills Parkway west section from Walland to Chilhowee — 17 miles of ridge road with no stops and uninterrupted views into Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Pull over at the overlooks. Top down on the Miata. It's a short stretch but it's the kind of drive that makes the whole day feel intentional.

From the western end of Foothills Parkway you're 20 minutes from the Cades Cove entrance. The loop road is 11 miles of pastoral valley — open fields, historic homesteads, deer everywhere if you go early. It's not a driving road (20 mph limit, not designed for it) but it's one of the most scenic morning loops in the region. Do it before 9am and the crowds haven't arrived yet.

Dinner in Gatlinburg or Townsend is the natural endpoint. Townsend is quieter, more local, less tourist density. Gatlinburg has more options and the energy of being in a small mountain tourist town at night — which is its own thing. Either way you're 30–40 minutes from the Maryville return.

Choosing the car for the occasion

The Miata is the anniversary car. It's not complicated: two seats, soft top down, warm spring or fall evening, winding road. The top-down intimacy of a small roadster on a mountain road is a specific feeling that you don't get in anything else. Book this for a couple who hasn't driven something like this before and watch the energy change ten minutes in.

The Supra is for the anniversary where you want it to feel like an event from the first look in the morning. You pull up to the hotel in a 382-horsepower Toyota with the exhaust note, and the day has started correctly. It's more impressive to the outside world than the Miata, it has more power on the highway stretches, and it's comfortable enough for a full day without the intimacy of a small sports car.

The 1994 MR2 GTS is for gearhead couples. If both people in the relationship know what a mid-engine layout means, if they've said 'I'd love to drive an MR2' at some point in the relationship, this is a meaningful gesture rather than just a nice car. It's the story car — the one you'll describe to people at dinner that night. 'We rented a '94 MR2 for our anniversary.' That lands differently than 'we rented a sports car.'

  • Foothills Parkway west: 17 miles, ridge-top, Smoky Mountain views, no traffic lights
  • Cades Cove loop: 11 miles, pastoral, best before 9am for light crowds
  • Cherohala Skyway: longer option — 43 miles if you want a full driving day
  • Dinner in Townsend: quieter and more local than Gatlinburg
  • Sunset from Look Rock observation tower on Foothills Pkwy: one of the region's best views

Logistics that make the day easier

Pick up the car the evening before if possible. That way Saturday morning starts from your hotel with the car already in hand, not with a drive to the pickup point. Evening-before pickup doesn't cost extra — the rental period just starts then.

The contactless lockbox at TYS Economy Lot C works any hour. If you're flying in Friday evening for a weekend anniversary trip, the car is there whenever you land. Maryville pickup is coordinated in advance but can usually be arranged for Friday evening as well.

Weather matters for convertibles. May and October are statistically the best months in East Tennessee for top-down weather — warm but not summer-humid, blue skies more often than not. June through August works but is hotter. Spring can surprise you with rain. Check the forecast and have a flexible itinerary; the region is worth visiting in rain too, the car just becomes a coupe.

Frequently asked questions

What's the most romantic car in the fleet?

The Miata. Two seats, soft top down, winding mountain road — it's the most intimate driving experience in the fleet. The Supra is more impressive from the outside. The MR2 is more of a story. But the Miata is the car where the passenger can't look at their phone because the world is passing three feet away and there's no roof between you and the mountains.

Can we do a sunrise drive at Cades Cove?

Yes, and it's worth it. The Cades Cove loop road opens at sunrise. Getting there before 8am means the wildlife is active, the light is low and golden, and the crowds haven't arrived. Pair it with an early pickup the morning-of or an evening-before pickup to make it work logistically.

Is the Miata comfortable for a full day of driving?

Yes for two adults of average size. It's a small car, so six-footers should be aware of the headroom with the top up, but top-down it's fine for most people. The seats are supportive, the driving position is natural, and the controls fall to hand easily. It's not a long-distance cruiser but for a day-drive with stops it's genuinely comfortable.

Can I surprise my partner — book the car without them knowing the details?

Yes. Book in your name, pick it up yourself, and drive to where they are. They don't need to be part of the booking process. The only time both people's information matters is if you both plan to drive — an additional driver needs to be listed in the booking.

What if we want to go to dinner and I've had drinks — can my partner drive back?

Yes, if your partner is added as an additional driver in the booking. Both people need a valid license and insurance on file. If only one person is listed as a driver, only that person can drive. Add the additional driver before you leave for dinner.

Is there a specific route recommendation for the Supra on an anniversary day?

Pick up in Maryville, take 321 to Townsend, then Foothills Parkway west to Chilhowee Lake overlook. Come back through Maryville, take 129 south toward Deals Gap if you want the Dragon experience — the Supra on that road is exceptional. Return via Tellico Plains and back north. Full loop is 120–150 miles; plan for 5–6 hours with stops.

What about the MR2 — is it reliable for a full day drive?

Yes. The MR2 in our fleet is well-maintained and regularly serviced. It's a 30-year-old car with the character that comes with that, but it's not fragile or undependable. If anything goes mechanically sideways, we're reachable and we'll work it out. We don't send cars out on rentals that aren't ready.
