Gatlinburg is a resort town. The short-term rental market there is all vacation cabins, not cars. Turo's algorithm picks up on geographic intent and broadens the search to the nearest metro with Turo supply — which is Knoxville and McGhee Tyson Airport, about 45 minutes west.

Gatlinburg visitors break into three buckets. Families heading to the Smokies for hiking, waterfalls, and a scenic drive to Clingman's Dome want something capable and comfortable — the Odyssey or the FJ Cruiser. The Odyssey handles car seats, camp gear, and the narrow mountain roads without stress.

Couples and adults who pair the Gatlinburg trip with the Dragon or the Foothills Parkway want a sports car. The BRZ, Supra, or Miata. These guests almost always have specific vehicle questions — what tires are on it, when was it last aligned, is the clutch light — and those questions are answered faster when you're messaging a direct host than going through Turo.

Solo travelers or friends doing the Smokies usually want something fun and manageable. The Civic Sport Touring, the BRZ, or the WRX GT. All clean, all maintained, all easily picked up from TYS on the way to Gatlinburg.

You land at TYS, shuttle to Economy Lot C, unlock the car, and you're on Alcoa Highway within minutes. US-441 south is a straight shot toward Gatlinburg from there — through Maryville, through Townsend, and into the mountains. Or you cut over earlier on US-321 if you want the scenic routing.

45 minutes is fast enough that most guests pick up at TYS and drive directly to Gatlinburg rather than stopping at the Maryville pickup point. The airport adds logistics simplicity for travelers with checked bags.
