The cases where renting a car for UT actually makes sense
Flying in for a UT event is the primary case. McGhee Tyson Airport is 12 miles from campus and handles most of the out-of-town traffic. If you're coming from Nashville, Atlanta, or anywhere with a direct or one-stop flight to TYS, a rental car is the practical choice — Uber availability around campus fluctuates wildly on game days and during move-in weekend.
Move-in day is the most car-intensive UT event on the calendar. Families show up from across the country with carloads of gear, and whatever they drove or rented needs to get from Economy Lot C at TYS to campus and back. The Odyssey is the clear answer: sliding doors, fold-flat third row, and maximum cargo volume in any vehicle we rent.
Alumni trips and game weekends are a different case. The car isn't the point — it's part of the experience. Arriving at Neyland in a Supra or a BRZ is a distinct choice from a rental Civic, and if you're flying home anyway, the incremental cost to drive something memorable is often worth it. We've had alumni rent the MR2 specifically because it's the age of the car they drove in college.
Driving on and around campus
UT Knoxville campus is compact and walkable, which means parking is difficult and most visitors end up parking once and walking. Cumberland Avenue runs along the south edge of campus and is the main approach from downtown. Neyland Drive borders the Tennessee River on the north, and that's where Neyland Stadium sits. The walk from a Cumberland Avenue parking garage to the stadium is about 10 minutes.
For game days, plan your parking before you arrive. The Vol Walk — the pre-game procession toward the stadium — runs along a pedestrian corridor that closes surrounding streets. If you're arriving by rental car, the campus garages south of campus fill early; residential blocks farther west usually have street parking but involve a longer walk.
Non-game visits are much simpler. The campus visitor center on Andy Holt Avenue has day parking, and the main academic buildings are a short walk from most surface lots. The Hill — the academic core — is walkable from anywhere you'd park.
Combining a UT trip with more of East Tennessee
TYS and the Maryville area put you 50–60 minutes from the Smokies, so a UT trip and a Smokies day can sit in the same rental window. Families occasionally do a parents weekend tack-on to the Smokies after dropping off their student; alumni often combine a game weekend with a drive on the Foothills Parkway or a run through Cades Cove on Sunday before their flight.
Multi-day bookings unlock the best rates and that flexibility. A 3-day rental — fly in Friday, move-in or game on Saturday, Smokies on Sunday — is a common booking pattern and comes in well under what two separate car-rental transactions would cost.

Frequently asked questions
How far is McGhee Tyson Airport from UT's campus?
About 12 miles, typically 20–25 minutes under normal traffic. From Economy Lot C at TYS, you're on Alcoa Highway (US-129 North) straight into campus. On a game day, add 15–20 minutes minimum.
What's the best car for move-in day?
The 2023 Honda Odyssey Sport. It has the most cargo volume of any vehicle in the fleet — fold-flat third row, low load floor, and sliding rear doors that make sense in tight campus parking areas. Most families could fit a dorm room's worth of gear in a single trip.
What about game day rentals?
We rent for game weekends. If you want to show up in something other than a midsize sedan, the Supra and BRZ are the usual alumni picks. Book well ahead for major games — availability tightens significantly on big-rivalry weekends.
Do you have early morning airport pickup for early flights?
Yes. The TYS pickup is contactless — your code is in your booking confirmation, and the car is in Economy Lot C whenever you need it. You're not waiting on a rental agent; pick up on your own schedule, any hour.
Is parking available near Neyland Stadium on game days?
Campus garages fill fast. Most game-day visitors use the Vol Walk lots or park farther out and walk. Book parking in advance through UT's athletics parking portal — street parking within a half mile usually has something, but plan 30–45 minutes of buffer on arrival.
Can I extend my rental to add a Smokies day after move-in?
Yes. Contact us before the trip starts and we can extend the booking if the vehicle is available. Multi-day discounts kick in at 3, 7, and 28 days — building in the extra day upfront is usually cheaper than adding it after.
