Graduation — East Tennessee
The first drive of what comes next
The Supra for the grad who earned it. The Odyssey for the family who flew in for the ceremony. Either way — no counter, no line.
Quick answer
Drive865 graduation rentals come in two formats: the car as a gift for the graduating driver (Supra, BRZ, WRX STI — a day in something they've never driven), or the family logistics car for parents and relatives flying into TYS for the ceremony (Odyssey or NV Passenger). UT Knoxville holds May graduation ceremonies at Thompson-Boling Arena. Maryville College graduates in May on the campus. Either way, the Drive865 fleet picks up contactless at TYS Economy Lot C or our Maryville location. No counter, no line.

The graduation car gift
Renting a Drive865 car as a graduation gift is a specific format that works: one day in a car they've talked about or always wanted to drive. The Supra for a graduate who watches car content, has mentioned the Supra specifically, or just deserves the most impressive car in the fleet. The BRZ for a driving-focused grad who wants the RWD manual experience they couldn't afford in their own car. The WRX STI for the grad who's been wanting the AWD turbo experience and knows exactly what they're getting.
The gift framing works because it's a finite, specific experience: not an ongoing cost, not a car they have to maintain, just one good day on East Tennessee roads. Most graduation gift rentals are a single day — pick up on a weekend after the ceremony when the grad has time for a proper drive.
For gearhead parents renting for their graduate: book the car you know they'd pick. If they've said 'I'd love to drive a WRX STI' at any point in the last two years, that's the answer. If they're a newer driver who's excited about something fun but approachable, the Civic or BRZ is the better starting point than the more demanding sports cars.
Family transport for UT Knoxville and Maryville College graduation weekends
UT Knoxville graduation is a serious logistics event — thousands of families, often with relatives flying into TYS from across the country. The Honda Odyssey seats seven and makes TYS pickup practical for a family of five or six arriving on different flights. The NV Passenger seats 12 for larger extended families or friend groups traveling together.
Maryville College graduates on the hilltop campus in May — a more intimate ceremony in a beautiful setting. The Maryville College campus is about 10 minutes from our Maryville pickup location, making logistics unusually convenient. Maryville area lodging is limited on graduation weekend — families commuting from TYS to Maryville College benefit from a vehicle that handles the back-and-forth without multiple trips.
High school graduation in the Knoxville area — Maryville High, Alcoa High, and the Knox County high schools — typically happens in late May. The rental dynamic is similar: family logistics car for the ceremony day, possibly a gift car for the grad on a subsequent weekend when they have time to enjoy it properly.
The graduation drive: where to take it
The graduation day drive is often what the grad wants to do right after the ceremony. For a drive-focused graduate renting the BRZ or STI: pick up the morning after graduation, take US-129 south from Maryville toward Chilhowee and Deals Gap. The Dragon is 55 minutes from Maryville. It's a proper day on a proper road — the best version of a graduation drive in East Tennessee.
For a more relaxed graduation drive — about the car without demanding the technical challenge of the Dragon — the Foothills Parkway west section is 35 minutes from Maryville. Seventeen miles of ridge road with the Smoky Mountains on both sides. Not the Dragon, but a genuinely memorable drive for a grad who just wants to feel what a real sports car does.
For families: Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge, and Sevierville are 45–50 minutes from Maryville. Post-graduation dinner in Gatlinburg in the Odyssey with the whole family is a reliable East Tennessee graduation weekend tradition.

Frequently asked questions
Can a parent rent the car as a graduation gift without the grad knowing?
Yes. Book in the parent's name, coordinate the reveal separately. The grad doesn't need to be part of the booking process. If the grad will be driving, they need to be added as a driver in the booking (valid license, 21+ age requirement, appropriate insurance). The parent can remain the primary on the booking.
What's the minimum age to rent a Drive865 car?
21 years old. Renters between 21–24 pay a young driver fee. A graduate who is 20 or younger cannot be the primary renter — a parent or older family member would need to book. The graduate can still be an additional listed driver if they meet the age and license requirements.
Is the Supra appropriate for a new or young driver?
It depends on experience. The Supra is an 8-speed automatic with 382hp — it's faster than it looks but managed well by the transmission. A brand-new driver with no sports car experience should probably start with the Civic or WRX GT (AWD, more forgiving) before the Supra. For a graduate who has been driving for a few years and is comfortable behind the wheel, the Supra is a manageable and meaningful experience.
How early should I book for UT graduation weekend?
As early as possible — UT graduation weekend in May is one of the highest-demand periods in the Drive865 calendar. Book 4–6 weeks in advance to get your preferred vehicle. The Odyssey and NV Passenger are particularly popular for the family logistics use case that weekend.
Can the Odyssey fit a whole family plus luggage from TYS?
Yes. The Honda Odyssey seats 7 and has a generous cargo area, especially with the third row stowed. For a family of 5 with checked baggage from TYS, it handles the airport pickup without drama. For 6 or more adults with luggage, the NV Passenger or a two-car approach is more comfortable.
Is there a multi-day discount for graduation weekend bookings?
Yes. Multi-day discounts start at 15% off at 3 days, up to 45% off for weekly bookings. For families who need the Odyssey or NV Passenger for a full graduation weekend (Friday through Monday), the multi-day rate makes the per-day cost significantly lower.
