East Tennessee // JDM classics

No RX-7. The MR2 GTS is the 90s JDM turbo we have.

Both are iconic 1990s Japanese sports cars. RX-7 was rotary front-mid-engine; MR2 is turbo mid-engine. Different layouts, same generation, same cult status.

We don't rent that. Try the 1994 Toyota MR2 GT-S.

The RX-7 FD (1993-2002) and MR2 GTS (1991-1999 SW20) occupied the same era and the same JDM sports car space — both were mid-to-high-end Japanese sports cars with distinctive powertrains, lightweight platforms, and significant enthusiast followings. The RX-7's rotary is genuinely irreplaceable; no car in our fleet makes the sound or has the power delivery of a healthy 13B-REW. The MR2's 3S-GTE turbocharged four produces its power differently (conventional turbo spool) but shares the era, the manual gearbox, and the mid-engine layout that defines the most exotic dynamic character in the JDM class.

The 1990s JDM moment these two cars share

The Mazda RX-7 FD and Toyota MR2 SW20 are both products of the Japanese sports car golden era — the 1990s when Toyota, Honda, Mazda, and Nissan competed to build the most interesting driver's cars in the world. The RX-7 won on drama (rotary engine, sequential twin-turbo, perfect weight distribution at 50/50). The MR2 won on dynamics (true mid-engine balance, turbo available in GTS trim, intimate cockpit).

Both are cars that people fly to East Tennessee to drive. The Dragon's technical corners are exactly what these platforms were designed for. A 1994 MR2 GTS on Tail of the Dragon is an experience you'll remember; a healthy RX-7 on the same road would be equally memorable but you'd need to find one.

Why RX-7s are rare in the rental market

The RX-7's rotary engine requires careful maintenance — regular oil addition, proper warm-up, and a driver who understands the car's quirks. For rental use, this makes the RX-7 a challenging vehicle to operate reliably. The MR2's conventional turbocharged four is straightforward by comparison.

If you specifically want an RX-7, Turo is the path — enthusiast owners occasionally list them in the Knoxville area, but availability is very limited. The MR2 GTS in our fleet is a more consistent and reliable way to access the 1990s JDM turbo sports car experience.

Frequently asked questions

Is the MR2 as dramatic as the RX-7?

Different drama. The RX-7's rotary is genuinely a singular experience — the sound, the power delivery, the constant oil consumption ritual are all unique. The MR2's mid-engine turbo is dramatic in its own right — the 3S-GTE's turbo spool and the mid-engine rotation in corners are memorable in a different way.

Is there an RX-7 on Turo in East Tennessee?

Very rarely — RX-7 FDs on Turo in any market are uncommon because of maintenance complexity. When they do appear in the Knoxville area, they book quickly.

Is the MR2 good for the Dragon?

Excellent. The MR2 GTS is the most memorable car in our fleet for the Dragon — mid-engine, turbo, 5-speed, 1994. The rotation in corners with mid-engine balance is special. More demanding than the BRZ but more memorable for an experienced driver.

What year is your MR2?

1994 — SW20 generation, the GTS trim with the 3S-GTE turbocharged engine. Pop-up headlights, 5-speed manual, mid-engine layout.

Does the MR2 have a targa top?

The SW20 MR2 was available with a removable targa roof panel. Our specific car's configuration is something we can confirm — message us before booking if the targa top is important to your trip.

Can I pick this up if I'm staying in Gatlinburg or Pigeon Forge?

Yes. Our pickup is near TYS in Maryville/Alcoa. From Gatlinburg it's about 50 minutes; from Pigeon Forge or Sevierville it's 40–45 minutes.
