East Tennessee // Toyota family substitution

We don't rent the Land Cruiser. The FJ is the Toyota 4WD we have.

Both are body-on-frame Toyota SUVs with real 4WD capability. The FJ is smaller and lighter — a better fit for Cades Cove and East TN forest roads.

We don't rent that. Try the 2013 Toyota FJ Cruiser Trail Teams.

The Land Cruiser and FJ Cruiser share Toyota's body-on-frame philosophy and real 4WD capability. The Land Cruiser is Toyota's flagship luxury SUV — larger, more comfortable, more expensive. The FJ Cruiser is the purpose-built adventure SUV — more focused, more compact, and for East Tennessee's trails and forest service roads, more appropriate. The Cades Cove loop has tight sections where the FJ's smaller footprint is an advantage over the Land Cruiser's 195-inch length.

Why smaller is better for East TN forest roads

The Toyota Land Cruiser is an exceptional vehicle for the destinations it was designed for — African safari routes, remote overland expeditions, multi-week cross-country drives. In East Tennessee, the Cades Cove loop's narrow passages, the tight switchbacks on forest service roads in Cherokee National Forest, and the limited-size parking areas at trailheads actually favor a more compact SUV. The FJ Cruiser's 184-inch length is more manageable than the Land Cruiser's 195-inch body.

The FJ Trail Teams also has a rear locker as standard equipment — something you'd need a specific Land Cruiser trim configuration to match. For the trip most Land Cruiser searchers in East Tennessee are planning (Smokies, Cades Cove, occasional gravel), the FJ is the more appropriate tool.

Frequently asked questions

Is the FJ Cruiser as capable as the Land Cruiser?

For East Tennessee trips, yes. The Land Cruiser's edge is in extended overland expeditions with extreme terrain. For the Smokies, Cades Cove, and Cherokee National Forest roads, the FJ Trail Teams is equally capable and more nimble.

Can the FJ seat more than 5 people?

No. If you need 6+ seats, the Odyssey Sport (7 seats) or NV Passenger (12 seats) are the options. No Land Cruiser-class 8-seat SUV is in our current fleet.

Is there a Land Cruiser on Turo in East Tennessee?

Occasionally — private Land Cruiser listings appear on Turo in the Knoxville area. Availability is inconsistent.

Can I take the FJ to Cades Cove?

Yes — the FJ is our top recommendation for Cades Cove. Upright visibility, body-on-frame capability for gravel pull-offs, and a 5-seat interior for the family.

Is the FJ automatic or manual?

Our Trail Teams is the 5-speed automatic — smooth and well-matched to the 4.0L V6.

Can I pick this up if I'm staying in Gatlinburg or Pigeon Forge?

Yes. Our pickup is near TYS in Maryville/Alcoa. From Gatlinburg it's about 50 minutes; from Pigeon Forge or Sevierville it's 40–45 minutes. Many guests pick up at TYS on arrival and drive directly to their Smokies destination.
