Dollywood from Knoxville with a rental car
45 minutes from TYS. Two routes. Three car picks depending on how many people you have and how much you care about the drive.

Quick answer
Dollywood is about 45 minutes from TYS via US-321 through Maryville and Townsend — the scenic back road through the Smokies that avoids the Pigeon Forge strip entirely until you arrive. US-441 through Sevierville and Pigeon Forge is the faster route but puts you in mountain-town traffic for 20 minutes. For groups, the Odyssey (7 seats) or NV Passenger (12 seats) are the obvious picks. For adults who want the drive to be half the trip, the Supra on US-321 makes the approach genuinely enjoyable.
Getting there — US-321 vs. US-441
From TYS, you have two realistic routes to Dollywood. US-321 goes south through Maryville, then east through Townsend and the Smokies foothills before arriving at Pigeon Forge on the back side. It's the longer route in miles (about 50 miles) but avoids the Sevierville/Pigeon Forge strip traffic entirely. The driving is genuinely good — two-lane mountain road through Maryville, past the Foothills Parkway junction, then a wide two-lane through Townsend. Drive times are 45–50 minutes under normal conditions.
US-441 goes east from Knoxville on I-40, exits at Sevierville, and comes down through Pigeon Forge on the main strip (US-441 through town). It's about 10 miles shorter and closer to 40 minutes under ideal conditions, but Pigeon Forge traffic on US-441 is among the most consistently congested roads in East Tennessee — especially Friday and Saturday afternoons, summer weekends, and any event weekend. The average 40 minutes can turn into 70 minutes without warning.
Our recommendation: US-321 on the way in, US-441 on the way back if you're staying in the Sevierville/Pigeon Forge area, or US-321 both ways if you're returning to Knoxville. US-321 is the more enjoyable road and avoids the worst of the congestion. If you're in a group car (Odyssey, NV Passenger), the US-321 route's two-lane sections are fine — the NV handles them easily.
Parking at Dollywood
Dollywood has its own dedicated parking lots on the property. Parking is charged separately from admission — current rates are in the range of $20–30 per car for standard parking (confirm current pricing at Dollywood's website before you go). Preferred parking closer to the entrance is available at a higher rate. Arrive early for preferred spots; standard parking is ample but fills on peak days.
Oversized vehicle parking is available and designated — important if you're in the NV Passenger van. Dollywood's staff directs large vehicles to appropriate areas on arrival. If you're in the NV with a full load of 12, make sure to arrive at a time when the oversized lots still have space — peak summer Saturdays fill faster.
Dollywood is at the top of a significant grade. From the parking lots, you'll either walk up a steep hill or take Dollywood's tram service (free with admission) from the parking areas to the park entrance. The tram runs continuously on busy days — especially useful if you have young children or are visiting with elderly family members.
Best time to visit and seasonal events
Dollywood operates spring through early January with some breaks. Summer (June–August) is the most crowded period — weekend crowds are significant and ride lines can be 60–90 minutes on popular attractions. The park opens at 10am most days; arrive when the gates open and head to the major rides first while lines are short.
The Harvest Festival (mid-September through October) is the most popular seasonal event at Dollywood — craft vendors, fall décor, the Southern Gospel Jubilee, and the park at peak fall color. This is also the most congested period. If you're visiting during Harvest Festival, expect parking to fill quickly on Saturdays and plan to arrive at or before the park's opening time.
Smoky Mountain Summer Celebration (June through early September) has extended evening hours and nighttime entertainment — worth staying for if you have younger kids. Dollywood's Wildwood Grove and Big Bear Mountain coaster are strong draws for families with children of varying ages. The Dollywood Express Train (a coal-fired steam train) circles the park and is a genuine highlight for kids and adults alike — one of the few real steam trains operating in a US theme park.
What to do nearby
The back side of Dollywood — the Townsend/Wears Valley approach via US-321 — has several stops worth building into the trip. Old Mill Square in Pigeon Forge (the original part of town, before the strip developed) has a working grist mill, a decent restaurant, and craft shops that are the real article rather than tourist-grade. It's 10 minutes from Dollywood and a complete contrast to the strip.
Cades Cove is 35 minutes west of Dollywood via US-321 — if you have a second day, combining Dollywood with a Cades Cove morning is a natural family trip. Great Smoky Mountains National Park's entrance at Gatlinburg is 10 minutes east of Dollywood; the Sugarlands Visitor Center and the first miles of Newfound Gap Road give you a clear view into the park without committing to the full Smokies itinerary.
If adults in the group want the scenic drive to be a real part of the day, the Foothills Parkway is 25 minutes from Dollywood via US-321. Drive the Parkway from Chilhowee to Walland on the way to or from Dollywood — 11 miles of ridge views that everyone in the car will remember, even if they're mostly excited about the theme park.
Practical tips — making the day work
Download the Dollywood app before you go. It has real-time ride wait times, show schedules, and mobile food ordering at some locations. The wait time data is accurate and lets you navigate the park efficiently rather than wandering into a line that's 90 minutes long. Plan your major rides in the first two hours after opening, when lines are 15–20 minutes, and schedule shows and food for the midday peak.
The drive back from Dollywood at the end of the day — especially in summer — can be slow on US-441 through Pigeon Forge as the park empties. US-321 west through Townsend to Maryville is the faster return if you're headed back to TYS or Knoxville. Leave 30 minutes of buffer in your return timeline; the back roads move faster than the strip.
Fuel note for Drive865 renters: there are fuel stations in Maryville on the US-321 corridor. Refuel there rather than paying premium prices at the Pigeon Forge stations on US-441. The Maryville station is 5–10 minutes before the TYS return drop-off — plan to fuel there on the way back.

Frequently asked questions
How far is Dollywood from TYS?
About 45–50 minutes via US-321 through Maryville and Townsend (the scenic back road, recommended). About 40 minutes via US-441 through Sevierville and Pigeon Forge under ideal conditions — but Pigeon Forge traffic routinely turns that into 60–70 minutes on busy days.
What is the best car for a family trip to Dollywood?
The Honda Odyssey (7 seats) is the right call for a family of up to 7. Smooth ride, good cargo space for strollers and bags, easy for kids to get in and out. For a larger group — 8 to 12 people — the NV Passenger seats 12 and is the vehicle that makes a group Dollywood trip feasible without three separate cars.
Is the Dollywood parking expensive?
Standard parking is $20–30 per car (confirm current pricing on Dollywood's website — rates adjust seasonally). Preferred parking is priced higher. There's no off-site parking with a shuttle like some major parks — you're parking on-site. The parking fee is real, so factor it in when budgeting the total day.
When is Dollywood least crowded?
Early-season spring (April into early May) and mid-week days outside of school holidays tend to have shorter lines. The park is busiest from mid-June through Labor Day on weekends and during October's Harvest Festival. Arriving right at opening time (typically 10am) is the single most effective crowd management strategy regardless of time of year.
Can I do Dollywood and the Dragon in the same trip?
Yes, but they're different days. Day 1: TYS pickup, US-321 to Dollywood. Day 2: Tail of the Dragon via US-129. Townsend is the right overnight base — 15 minutes from the Dragon on Day 2, and 45 minutes from Dollywood on Day 1. The driving between the two is genuinely enjoyable on US-321.
What if there are adults in the group who don't love theme parks?
The US-321 approach through Townsend is genuinely scenic enough that the drive is a real part of the day. Non-theme-park adults can sit on a bench in Dollywood and enjoy the crafts, food, and live music (Dollywood actually has good entertainment beyond rides). Or they can do a separate drive — the Foothills Parkway is 25 minutes away. Split the group for a few hours if the kids want rides and the adults want mountain roads.
Is there anything to do near Dollywood if we have a second day?
Yes. Cades Cove (35 minutes west), Great Smoky Mountains National Park entrance at Gatlinburg (10 minutes), Old Mill Square in downtown Pigeon Forge (10 minutes), and the Foothills Parkway western section (25 minutes via US-321). The region has more than enough for two full days without doubling back on the same attractions.
