The key road from Townsend is Little River Road, which runs east through the park to Sugarlands and Gatlinburg. It follows the Little River through narrow gorges and is one of the more scenic low-speed drives in the park. Cades Cove Loop Road branches south from Little River Road — the 11-mile one-way wildlife and history loop that draws more visitor traffic than almost anything else in the park.

Townsend guests who pick up in Maryville are inside the park less than 15 minutes after leaving the lockbox.

Cades Cove Loop is an 11-mile one-way paved loop — it's not rough. But the FJ Cruiser's elevated seating and wide field of view make wildlife spotting significantly easier than from a low sports car or even a standard sedan. The loop slows to a crawl when deer, turkey, or black bears are spotted, and the FJ handles stop-and-go loop pacing naturally.

Beyond the loop, the FJ's ground clearance handles the occasional graveled turn-off or primitive access road better than street cars. If you drive past Abrams Creek or take any NPS access roads that open seasonally, the FJ Cruiser doesn't hesitate.

For families in Townsend, the Odyssey trades the FJ's trail capability for seven seats and significantly more cargo volume. If your trip is large family plus Cades Cove plus picnic gear, the Odyssey makes more practical sense.

Maryville is one of the closest operational bases for any car rental near Townsend. National chains at TYS don't have the vehicle specificity we offer, and Turo's nearest host inventory is typically Knoxville — 45 or more minutes from Townsend versus our 30.

For guests whose primary destination is Townsend and the Quiet Side, the Maryville pickup point is the fastest access in the fleet. Book direct, pick up at Maryville, and you're driving into the park before a Turo booking from Knoxville would even be confirmed.
