East Tennessee // Honest gap

We don't rent the G-Wagon. Different brief entirely.

The G-Wagon is a status symbol that happens to be capable. The FJ Cruiser is a capable vehicle that happens to be a status symbol among enthusiasts.

We don't rent that. Try the 2013 Toyota FJ Cruiser Trail Teams.

The Mercedes G-Class (G-Wagon) and Toyota FJ Cruiser are both body-on-frame SUVs with real 4WD capability — that's the extent of the similarity. The G-Wagon is a $140,000+ luxury fashion icon that commands its price because of the badge, the aesthetic, and the association with a certain level of affluence; the FJ Cruiser is a $30,000 adventure vehicle designed by Toyota for purposeful outdoor capability. They're built for completely different buyers. What connects them for East Tennessee trips is that both handle the Smokies, Cades Cove, and forest service roads with equal confidence. We're recommending the FJ because it's what we have, not because it's a genuine G-Wagon alternative in any meaningful luxury or status sense.

The G-Wagon and FJ are built for different buyers

We're not going to tell you the FJ Cruiser is a G-Wagon alternative with a straight face in any conventional sense. The G-Wagon is a fashion icon that commands its price because of the badge, the aesthetic, and the association with a certain level of affluence. The FJ Cruiser is an adventure vehicle built for people who want to go places.

For East Tennessee trips — Cades Cove, the Smokies, forest roads — both vehicles do the job. The G-Wagon's three differential lockers are more capable than anything East Tennessee's roads require. The FJ's one rear locker is equally adequate. The experience of arriving at the Cades Cove visitor center in a G-Wagon vs an FJ Trail Teams is different for social reasons, not mechanical ones.

Finding a G-Wagon in East Tennessee

G-Wagon rentals don't exist through national chains anywhere. On Turo, private G550 and AMG G63 owners occasionally list their vehicles — typically in major cities. In Knoxville specifically, G-Wagon Turo listings are rare to nonexistent. For a G-Wagon rental, Nashville or Atlanta are more realistic markets.

Frequently asked questions

Is the FJ Cruiser a status symbol?

Within the overlanding and adventure community, yes — the FJ Cruiser, especially the Trail Teams edition, is a respected and desirable vehicle. It doesn't carry G-Wagon mainstream recognition, but enthusiasts notice it.

Is there a G-Wagon on Turo in East Tennessee?

Very rarely — and even when one appears, availability is limited and insurance requirements are complex. Nashville is a more realistic market for G-Wagon Turo listings.

Does the FJ Cruiser feel premium?

No — the FJ's interior is durable and purposeful, not luxurious. The controls are simple and the materials are practical. What it does feel is solid and capable, which is a different kind of satisfying.

What if I need a luxury SUV with 4WD?

Turo is the only realistic path in East Tennessee for luxury 4WD SUVs (G-Wagon, Range Rover, Cayenne). Drive865's fleet is enthusiast-and-adventure focused, not luxury-focused.

Can the FJ handle Cades Cove?

Yes — it's our top recommendation for Cades Cove. Upright seating, tall glass, body-on-frame confidence on the gravel pull-offs.

Can I pick this up if I'm staying in Gatlinburg or Pigeon Forge?

Yes. Our pickup is near TYS in Maryville/Alcoa. From Gatlinburg it's about 50 minutes; from Pigeon Forge or Sevierville it's 40–45 minutes.
