East Tennessee // Honest gap

We don't rent the Rivian. The FJ Cruiser is the rugged we have.

The Rivian R1T is an electric adventure truck. The FJ Cruiser is a conventional 4WD adventure SUV. Both handle East Tennessee's gravel roads; only one is in our fleet.

We don't rent that. Try the 2013 Toyota FJ Cruiser Trail Teams.

The Rivian R1T is an electric adventure truck built specifically for outdoor exploration — quad-motor AWD with 800+ hp, adjustable air suspension, and an integrated gear tunnel between the cab and bed for camping equipment. It's a genuinely impressive outdoor adventure vehicle. The FJ Cruiser Trail Teams shares the adventure vehicle intent without the electric drivetrain — body-on-frame, 4WD with low range, rear locker, all-terrain tires. Both handle Cades Cove and Cherokee National Forest's gravel roads. The Rivian does it with more technology and a more impressive performance envelope; the FJ does it with proven simplicity and fuel that's available anywhere in Maryville, Townsend, or Gatlinburg.

The Rivian's capability vs East Tennessee's roads

The Rivian R1T is built for overlanding adventures that push vehicle capability — river crossings, rocky trails, multi-day wilderness camps. East Tennessee's accessible terrain (Cades Cove, Cherokee National Forest gravel roads, Smoky Mountain approaches) is well within the FJ Cruiser's capability. The Rivian's 14 inches of adjustable air suspension and 835 hp quad-motor system is significantly more than East Tennessee's trails require.

The FJ's relative limitation is in charging logistics. The Rivian's electric drivetrain becomes less convenient as you get further from Knoxville toward the more rural areas of the park. The FJ's 4.0L V6 refuels at any gas station in Maryville, Townsend, or Gatlinburg without planning.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a Rivian R1T on Turo in East Tennessee?

Very rarely — Rivian Turo listings are uncommon nationally and nearly nonexistent in Knoxville specifically. Nashville is a more realistic market.

Is the FJ Cruiser electric?

No — conventional gasoline 4.0L V6. If an electric drivetrain is specifically important for environmental or performance reasons, the FJ is a different kind of vehicle.

Can the FJ handle what the Rivian can?

For East Tennessee's terrain, yes. For the Rivian's designed use case (extreme overlanding, river crossings, multi-day wilderness camps), the FJ has less capability. For Cades Cove, Cherokee National Forest gravel, and Smoky Mountain trailheads, the FJ is fully adequate.

What's the Rivian's charging situation in East Tennessee?

Rivian Adventure Network chargers are expanding but limited in rural East Tennessee as of 2026. DC fast charging in Knoxville exists; in Townsend or Tellico Plains, it's sparse. Plan carefully for a Rivian trip if it involves leaving the main corridor.

Can the FJ do camping trips?

Yes — Trail Teams spec handles forest campsite access, and the rear cargo area fits gear for a two-person trip. The FJ's simple mechanical systems are also the easiest to troubleshoot if something goes wrong in the field.

Can I pick this up if I'm staying in Gatlinburg or Pigeon Forge?

Yes. Our pickup is near TYS in Maryville/Alcoa. From Gatlinburg it's about 50 minutes; from Pigeon Forge or Sevierville it's 40–45 minutes.
